What is Biome?

Biomes are the major types of terrestrial ecosystem that cover large regions of Earth.

Aspects that determine the chacteristics of each biome

Each biome has typical communities of organisms that are adapted to its climate and other abiotic factors.

Main information about land biomes

There are eight major biomes:
  • Tropical Forest
  • Savanna
  • Desert
  • Chaparral
  • Temperate Grassland
  • Temparate Deciduous forest
  • Coniferous Forest
  • Tundra

Biomes: What organisms live there? main animals and plants

TROPICAL FOREST:
Plants: trees and plants growing in vertical layers and also covered with mosses, vines. Orchids and bromeliads.

Animals: tree-dwellers like monkeys, birds, snakes and bats.

SAVANNA:
Plants: grasslands with scattered trees that grow rapidly.
Animals: grazing animals such as zebras, wilde-beest, antelope, and in Australia kangaroos as weel as insect. Meat eaters on the African Savanna include lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. Also rodents, snakes, worms and arthropods.

DESERT:
Plants: due to the hot temperatures, they have little or no plant life.

Animals: The kangaroo rat and small burrowers are active in the cool evening because they don´t need water.

CHAPARRAL:
Plants: it has dense evergreen shrubs.
Animals: Deers, birds and rodents that feed on the shrubs and their seeds, as well as lizards and snakes.

TEMPERATE GRASSLAND:
Plants: the deep, nutrient-rich soil supports a variety of grass and other plants.
Animals: large mammals that prevent the growth of woody shrub and trees.

TEMPERATE DECIDUOUS FOREST:
Plants: Deciduous trees and large trees such as maples, oaks, beeches, and hickory.
Animals: Mammals like deers, squirrels, chipmunks, foxes and bears, microorganisms are found there too.

CONIFEROUS FOREST:
Plants: towering cone-bearing evergreen trees souch as pine, spruce, fir, and hemlock.
Animals: Typical taiga animals like hares, moose elk, wolves and bears.

TUNDRA:
Plants: mosses, lichens, and grasses thrive, but large plants are rare since their roots can not penetrate.

Animals: artic hare and snowy owl. mosquitoes fill the air sometimes.
